# The User Object

> An account for a provider or staff member with access to an Elation practice.

## In the EHR

Practice admins invite, deactivate, and reactivate these accounts, and manage administrative privileges, from the Manage Accounts settings page. See [User Accounts Guide](/articles/managing-user-accounts).

## Working with the User object via the API

**This endpoint requires an Enterprise API key.** Requests made with a key that is not part of an Enterprise are rejected. Confirm your practice's API key is part of an Enterprise before building against this object.

**Creating a user never sends an invitation email.** `is_active: true` creates the account active immediately; `is_active: false` creates it inactive, which blocks login, including SSO. A practice admin can resend an invitation from the Manage Accounts page — see [User Accounts Guide](/articles/managing-user-accounts) — to get the user an activation email.
