# The Print Header Object

> A practice letterhead, either text or an image, that appears at the top of documents printed or sent from Elation.

## In the EHR

Print headers are managed under Print Headers in a practice's settings. A header belongs to the practice rather than to a single provider, so anyone in the practice can choose it when printing a document or sending a letter, and each user can set one as their default. A text header holds lines such as the practice's name and contact details, and an image header holds a logo or other graphic with a chosen alignment. See the [Print Headers Guide](/articles/print-headers).

## Working with print headers via the API

**Printable views use a print header only when you pass one.** [Retrieve the Printable Lab Order View](/articles/rest/orders-api/lab-orders/retrieve-the-printable-lab-order-view) and [Retrieve a printable view of a report](/articles/rest/patient-document-api/reports/retrieve-a-printable-view-of-a-report) accept a print header's `id` in the `print_header` query parameter. Without the parameter, the PDF's header is built from the practice's name, address, phone, and fax, and the default header a user has chosen in the EHR is not applied. Pass `print_header` whenever the PDF should carry one of the practice's custom headers.

**Deleting a print header archives it.** `DELETE` marks the header deleted rather than removing it. The header stays retrievable by its id and continues to appear in list responses, with `deleted_date` set to the time it was deleted. Check `deleted_date` when you need only the headers a practice currently offers.
