# Errors

All resources communicate error condition with standard HTTP status code. Below is an overview of all the supported codes, along with some suggestions that might help you fix things.

| HTTP Code | Message | Description |
| :- | :- | :- |
| 400 | Bad Request | Our server is unable to understand the request. This is likely caused by a programming error on your side. |
| 400 | `"Practice does not have API signing enabled"` | Returned when you supply `signed_by`/`signed_date` to sign a visit note, non-visit note, report, letter, message thread, or imaging/cardiac/pulmonary/sleep order without API document signing turned on for the practice. Scroll to [API document signing](#api-document-signing) at the bottom of this page for the full error body and how to fix it. |
| 401 | Unauthorized | This means that we were not able to authenticate you based on the information provided in the request. Make sure you're sending a valid access\_token. <br /> <br />If you're connecting using OAuth2, don't forget that tokens can expire. These will need to be refreshed. Not doing so can also result in getting a 401 error. |
| 403 | Forbidden | You don't have access to the requested resource. |
| 404 | Not Found | The resource you requested is not found. Please double check the URL of your request. |
| 409 | Conflict | The resource you're trying to create conflicts with an existing one. For example, the Patient Profile API returns a 409 when the `first_name`, `last_name`, `dob`, and `sex` you submit already match an existing patient, to prevent creating a duplicate chart. |
| 410 | Resource Deleted | The resource you are trying to modify has been deleted. |
| 415 | Unsupported Media Type | You are probably not `POST`ing content with application/json as content type. |
| 429 | Too Many Requests | Our API limits the rate at which you can perform certain actions. |
| 500 | Internal Server Error | Uh-oh. Something went wrong on our side. We're sorry. We keep track of these, and we'll try to fix it! |
| 503 | Service Unavailable | This means that we're having some trouble, and our servers are too busy to handle your request. You'll want to check for these and give your user a chance to retry the request. We keep track of these and try to make sure they don't happen. |
| 504 | Gateway Timeout | This means the request is taking too long. However, it doesn't always mean that we didn't receive your request. We could still be chugging away on the changes you made, and this means that you may want to check before retrying. |

## API document signing

Signing visit notes, non-visit notes, reports, letters, message threads, or imaging/cardiac/pulmonary/sleep orders through the API requires the authoring practice to have API document signing enabled. If you supply `signed_by` and `signed_date` (or `sign_date`) without that feature turned on, you'll get:

```json theme={null}
400 Bad Request
{
  "non_field_errors": [
    "Practice does not have API signing enabled"
  ]
}
```

Requests that omit both fields are unaffected — you only hit this if you're actively trying to sign.

**To fix it:** request that Elation enable API document signing for the practice via [Getting Help](/articles/rest/overview/getting-help). Before we can turn it on, an Admin User at the practice needs to review the [Signing API agreement](/files/api-document-signing-agreement.pdf) covering clinical oversight and regulatory responsibility for signing clinical notes and orders through the API, then reach out confirming they've read and agree to it.
